Let's say you have created a grid based on your soil sampling program, and you want to drape it on a DTM. However, a map or a Magnetic survey has already been draped on your DTM. Instead of draping on another DTM, you can display your grid based on known elevations so that the grids follow the surface in 3D.
The first thing you need to do is convert your grid to a data file. Navigate to GRID\DTM \Grid Convert \Convert Grid to Data File. This will result in point data that holds your grade values in this case. Note that we choose Z as the attribute value, which we will later overwrite with actual elevations in the next step.
Next, create a Z value based on your DTM. Go to Grid/DTM \ DTM Tools \ Generate Z value, and make sure to overwrite the existing Z value. This step will provide elevation, and your attribute will still hold the grade values.
Finally, use the Convert Data to Grid tool under the Grid/DTM toolbar. It reverse the first process by converting your points back into a grid output.
Now, display the grid, but use your original grid in the draping tab. Now you can display your grid based on its elevation!
